Different Types of Wigs: A Complete Guide

I’ve been wearing wigs for years and I’ve tried them all.

Whether you’re new to wigs or looking to add to your collection, knowing the different types can help you make the right choice for you.

Let’s get started!

Cap Construction

Cap construction

The cap is the base of any wig and construction can affect comfort, appearance and versatility.

1. Basic Cap

These are the most basic and affordable type of wigs. The hair is machine sewn onto a stretchy cap. They’re cheap but may not look as natural as other types especially at the crown.

2. Capless Wigs

Also known as “open cap” wigs, these have a more breathable design. Wefts of hair are sewn onto thin strips of material, allowing more airflow to your scalp. They’re lighter and cooler to wear which I found perfect for hot summer days.

3. Monofilament Wigs

These wigs have a sheer mesh top that creates the illusion of natural hair growth. The individual hairs are hand tied to this mesh, allowing for multi directional styling. I love monofilament wigs for its natural look especially at the part line.

4. Lace Front Wigs

Lace front wigs have a nearly invisible lace panel at the front hairline. This creates a super natural looking hairline, you can style your hair away from your face without worrying the wig will show.

5. Full Lace Wigs

These are the crème de la crème of wigs. The entire cap is made of lace, each hair is hand tied to the lace base. They offer the most styling versatility and the most natural look but comes with a higher price tag.

Hair Types

The type of hair used in a wig can affect its appearance, durability and maintenance needs.

1.Synthetic Wigs

Made from artificial fibers, synthetic wigs are cheap and low maintenance. They come pre styled and hold their shape well even after washing. I found these perfect for busy days when I didn’t have time to style.

2.Human Hair Wigs

These wigs are made from real human hair, the most natural look and feel. They can be styled, colored and treated just like your own hair. They require more maintenance but the versatility is unbeatable.

3. Heat Friendly Synthetic Wigs

These are a hybrid option, the convenience of synthetic hair with the styling versatility of human hair. They can withstand heat styling, you can change up your look.

4. Remy Human Hair Wigs

Remy hair wigs are made from human hair where all the cuticles are kept intact and aligned in the same direction. This results in less tangling and a more natural appearance. They're considered the highest quality of human hair wigs.

Attachment Methods

How the wig attaches to your head can make a big difference in its security, comfort and ease of use.

1. Glueless Wigs

These wigs don’t require any adhesive to stay in place. They have adjustable straps, combs or elastic bands to secure them. I love these for everyday wear, especially when I want to put on and off my wig quickly.

2. Glued Wigs

These wigs require adhesive to stay in place. They provide a more secure fit and can stay on longer. But they take more time to put on and off and you need to be careful with the adhesive to protect your skin and the wig.

3. Grip Band Wigs

These wigs have a silicone or velvet band around the perimeter that grips your head. They provide a secure fit without the need for glue or combs, a middle ground between glueless and glued options.

Style Types

Wigs come in many styles to fit different preferences and face shapes.

1.Short Wigs

Pixie cuts to bobs, short wigs are easy to wear and great for beginners. Perfect for a chic low maintenance look.

2. Long Wigs

Long wigs are versatile in styling. Straight, wavy or curly, long wigs can give you dramatic looks.

3.Wigs with Bangs

Bangs can frame your face and hide the hairline, making the wig look natural. Side swept to blunt bangs, there’s a style for everyone.

4.Braided Wigs

These wigs come pre-styled in various braid patterns. Perfect for an intricate look without the time commitment of real braids.

5. Curly and Wavy Wigs

Loose waves to tight curls, these wigs add volume and texture to your look. Great for adding a fun bouncy element to your style.

6. Layered Wigs

These wigs have hair cut at different lengths to create depth and movement. Can be very flattering and natural looking.

Specialty Wigs

1. Medical Wigs

For individuals experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions, these wigs have softer caps and are made with sensitive scalps in mind.

2. Hair Toppers

Not full wigs but partial pieces to add volume or coverage to specific areas of the scalp. For those with thinning hair who don’t need a full wig.

3. Men’s Wigs and Toupees

Designed for male hair loss patterns, these come in many styles and colors to fit different preferences.

4. Costume Wigs

For theatrical performances, cosplay or Halloween costumes. Often in bold colors and styles not found in everyday wigs.

Choosing the Right Wig For You

When choosing a wig type think about your lifestyle, budget and styling habits. If you are new to wigs you may want to start with a synthetic wig for ease of maintenance. As you get more comfortable you can move on to lace front or human hair wigs for a more natural look and more styling options.

Remember there is no one size fits all when it comes to wigs. Don’t be afraid to try different types to see what works for you. After all that’s what’s fun about wearing wigs – you can change your look as often as you like!
