What is a Synthetic Wig? The Wig Newbie Guide

I’ve been wearing wigs for years now and let me tell you, synthetic wigs have come a long way since I first started my wig journey.

If you’re new to the world of wigs or just curious about artificial hair wigs, you’re in the right place.

Let’s get into everything you need to know about synthetic wigs!

What is a Synthetic Wig?

A synthetic wig is made from man made fibers like polyester, acrylic or nylon.

These fibers are designed to look and feel like human hair but are 100% artificial.

Think of it as the “faux fur” of the wig world.

I remember the first time I put on a synthetic wig.

I was amazed!

The technology has come so far that sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between synthetic and human hair wigs at first glance.

If you want to get into the nitty gritty of what synthetic wigs are made of check out our full guide.

Pros of Synthetic Wigs

  1. Affordable: They are cheaper than human hair wigs. When I was starting out this was a big plus for me.

  2. Low maintenance: These wigs hold their style after washing. No need to style daily!

  3. Color options: Want to try that bold blue or perfect platinum? Artificial hair wigs come in crazy colors you can’t get with human hair.

  4. Lightweight: They’re usually lighter than human hair wigs which is great for all day wear.

  5. Weather resistant: Rain or shine your synthetic wig will keep its style.

Cons of Artificial Wigs

  1. Limited styling: You can’t use heat tools on most them so you’re stuck with the style it comes in.

  2. Shorter lifespan: They usually last 4-6 months with regular wear.

  3. Less natural movement: Some lower quality synthetics can look a bit “plastic-y” in movement.

  4. Heat sensitivity: Stand too close to the oven and you might melt your wig! (I learned this the hard way!)

Are Synthetic Wigs Good or Bad?

This is like asking if pizza is good or bad – it depends on what you’re looking for!

Synthetic wigs are great for beginners, those on a budget or anyone who wants low maintenance hair.

They’re perfect for trying out new styles or colors without commitment.

But if you want something that looks and feels like human hair or you love to switch up your hairstyle often, synthetic might not be for you.

In that case you might want to check out our human hair wigs guide to see if they’re a better fit for you.

Is Synthetic Real or Fake Hair?

Synthetic hair is 100% fake – but that doesn’t mean it can’t look real!

It’s made in a lab to look like human hair.

The quality varies a lot from super fake to “Is that her real hair?” real.

Do They Last?

With proper care a good quality synthetic wig can last 4-6 months with daily wear.

I’ve had some last longer!

But compared to human hair wigs which can last a year or more, synthetics have a shorter life.

To make your artificial wig last longer:

  • Wash it with products for synthetic hair

  • Store it on a wig stand when not in use

  • Don’t heat style (unless it’s heat friendly synthetic)

  • Use a wide tooth comb to detangle

Types of Synthetic Wigs

  1. Standard Synthetic: The most common, affordable and easy to maintain.

  2. Heat-Friendly: Can be heat styled, more versatile.

  3. Lace Front: Have a more natural looking hairline, great for pulling your hair back.

  4. Monofilament: Have a more natural looking part and scalp area.

  5. Hand Tied: Most natural movement, great for sensitive scalps.

My Thoughts

Synthetic wigs are a total game changer.

They’re affordable, low maintenance and can look super natural.

Whether you’re dealing with hair loss, want to change your look or just love to play with styles, there’s a synthetic wig for you.
